About Kushiro
Kushiro is a city in Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan in East Asia.
Akan National Park is an area of volcanic craters and forests. The park is famous for its crystal clear lakes and hot springs.
Kushiro Shitsugen National Park was created to preserve the country's largest wetland and marsh habitat which supports the only known population of endangered Japanese Cranes in Japan.
The park is located between Kushiro City and Akan National Park and offers bird watching, nature viewing and walking trails.
The Akan International Crane Centre is a museum, breeding centre and sanctuary where cranes can be seen year round.
The Marsh Observatory is connected to the Kushiro Shitsugen Viewpoint by a number of boardwalk paths that offer nice, easy walks. The Observatory houses exhibits about the surrounding marshlands.
The Nusamai Bridge, completed in 1976, has statues at various points along the railings symbolising each of the four seasons. It was the first bridge in Japan to have statues on it and is a famous Kushiro tourist attraction.
Other local attractions include the Kushiro Children's Museum, Kushiro Zoo and the Eco Museum Centre.
Fisherman's Wharf is the place to head for shopping and dining, good souvenirs include sake, ceramics, embroidery and Kokeshi dolls.
Popular dishes include fresh fish and seafood, sushi, ramen (noodle dish) and tempura (fish or vegetables in batter).

Cruise Terminal
Cruise ships dock at the Port of Kushiro. It is around a 7 minute journey by taxi to JR Kushiro Train Station and a 15 minute walk to the downtown area.
