Costa Allegra<\/p><\/div>\n

The Costa Allegra, which suffered a fire last month, will not return to service with Costa Cruises it has been announced.<\/p>\n

Carnival Corporation CEO Micky Arison told Wall Street today that the fire-damaged Allegra would be sold or scrapped.<\/p>\n

The 28,500 ton\u00a0ship was\u00a0for sale prior to the fire and its itineraries had already been replaced by the much newer Costa Voyager.<\/p>\n

“This was\u00a0the smallest and oldest ship in the Costa fleet so the writing was already on the wall prior to the fire. These older ships, although loved by traditional cruisers, are expensive to maintain, unreliable and not very fuel efficient.<\/p>\n

A lot of smaller cruise ships have already been scrapped due to\u00a0the new SOSUS regulations coming into force which require major safety upgrades to older ships, particularly with regards to the number of lifeboats.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
