Samos

Samos is a Greek island in the eastern Aegean Sea.

Samos has a good range of small shops selling everything from beach gear, handicrafts and jewellery to souvenirs, local wine and honey. Samos is also well known for red pottery.

Vathy, the island capital is home to the church of Agios Spyridon, the Byzantine Museum and the Archaeological Museum.

Psili Ammos and Potokaki beaches are popular with visitors.

There are many archaeological sites on Samos including Temple of Hera, the ancient theatre ruins, Pythagoras Caves and the castle of Lykourgos Logothetis.

Zoodochos Pigi and Agia Zoni monasteries are also worth visiting for their stunning architecture and wall murals.

From April to the end of October, daily ferries run between Samos and Kusadasi, in Turkey where you can visit the 3,000 year old city of Ephesus. The trip takes approximately 1.5 hours each way and a passport is required.

There are lots of opportunities for hiking, cycling and windsurfing on the island.

'Moussaka' (aubergine and meat layered casserole), 'pastitsio' (pasta and meat layered dish), 'spanakopita' (spinach pie) and 'baklava' (phyllo pastry dessert) are all well known, traditional Greek dishes.

Cruise ships usually anchor and tender passengers into town.

Taxis, car hire and public transport are all available nearby.
