Julianehab

Qaqortoq (formerly Julianehåb) is a town in the Kujalleq municipality in southern Greenland, located between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans, east of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago.

The Stone and Man Project is a local initiative. Visitors can explore the town, where there are around 30 different motifs sculpted and chiselled from rocks and stones.

The Great Greenland Furhouse Museum has collections of furs and skins.

The oldest fountain in the world is here in Qaqortog and is located near the harbour and the town square.

The Hvalsey Church claims to be the site of witch trials and burnings in the 15th century. It is also considered to be the best well preserved Norse ruins in the region.

Various excursions are offered including sailing to the hot springs in the south and visiting the glaciers of Narsaq. The tourist office near Qaqortoq port can offer helpful advice and organise activities.

Near to the centre of town is the Qaqortoq Museum, housing most of the town’s artefacts and treasures. Also here is the open air market, selling meat, fish, fruits and other local produce. Nearby are stalls selling souvenirs.

Traditional works of art made by local artists make a unique gift.

Local dishes include whale and reindeer meat as well as fresh fish dishes.

Cruise ships anchor and tender passengers ashore. The tourist centre is right at the dock area.
