An outbreak of the norovirus has forced the Crown Princess back to Port Everglades for extensive cleaning, cutting short its current cruise by 2 days.

More than 3,000 passengers will miss port calls at Curacao and Arura in the Caribbean.

Norovirus causes upset stomachs, diarrhea and vomiting.

“Although often associated with cruise ships, the norovirus is common throughout the world.

The problem with cruise ships is that the same group of people are put together in a closed space for a week with food being a big part of the experience. Since the norovirus is highly contagious it doesn’t take long to spread.

People in your local community get the norovirus everyday, often attributing it to just an upset stomach. The only difference with cruise ships is the ease at which it can be passed to others.

The virus doesn’t ‘lurk’ in cruise ships – it is usually brought onboard by an embarking passenger who has caught it prior to boarding.

Cruise lines manage the virus well, insisting on using sanitising lotions prior to entering restaurants, however if passengers ignore cleanliness procedures there is little more that cruise lines can do.”
